99% of Doctors Prescribe Opioids for more than 3 Days

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released guidelines for prescription opiates. Those guidelines recommend that doctors should prescribe habit-forming opioids for no more than three days in a majority of circumstances. In contrast to this guidance, a survey by the National Safety Council found 99% of doctors are prescribing them for longer than three days. Twenty-three percent of doctors further indicated they prescribed opioids for at least a month.

Recently, opioid overdose deaths surpassed car crashes as the leading cause of preventable deaths among American adults. Prescription opioids overdoes kill an estimated 52 people per day.
