Defending Agricultural Workers
One issue that has long been important to me is defending agricultural workers’ rights. These marginalized workers, some of whom have the added vulnerability of being undocumented, frequently face tough or even dangerous working conditions.
That’s why I was so pleased to see that CAL-OSHA (California’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration) has agreed to ramp up enforcement of heat-related regulations covering farmworkers. As part of a settlement of two lawsuits, the agency has also agreed to audit these enforcement efforts and make the results available to the public in a manner that can be understood by the average person. The United Farm Workers Union alleged that 28 workers in California have died of what was probably heat-related illness since the passage of the Heat Illness Prevention regulation in 2005.
I applaud any effort to keep agricultural workers safe. If you are an attorney who is interested in fighting to protect the rights of farmworkers, please email email@example.com or call 1-800-4WALKER.
