Takata Accused of Manipulating Airbag Testing Data

Embattled Japanese manufacturer Takata is facing accusations it manipulated testing data on its airbag inflators as early as 2000. The charge comes from an unidentified source with knowledge of internal company documents.

The source alleged the manipulation involved tests to demonstrate the inflators’ compliance with automakers’ design specifications.

Takata’s airbag inflators can explode with too much force, spraying the passenger compartment with shrapnel. The issue has been linked to at least eight deaths and more than 100 injuries.

Honda recently dropped Takata as a supplier of some airbag inflators, accusing the manufacturer of misrepresenting and manipulating test data.
