Takata Airbag Recall Grows by 35-40 Million Inflators

The Takata airbag recall has doubled in size to between 63.8 million and 68.8 million inflators, up from 28.8 million previously. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the additional 35-40 million inflators will be recalled in five stages ending in December 2019, with risk level determining the order of the recalls.

The problematic inflators contain ammonium nitrate, a chemical that can degrade over time in the presence of moisture. This can cause airbags to explode with too much force, spraying shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

Faulty Takata airbags have caused at least 10 fatalities and hundreds of injuries in the U.S.
