Takeda to Pay $2.4 Billion over Actos© Cancer Risks

Japanese drug manufacturer Takeda Pharmaceuticals has agreed to a $2.4 billion settlement to resolve lawsuits over the diabetes drug Actos©. The company did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement, and stressed that it felt the benefits of the drug outweighed the risks.

Patients and their families allege that Takeda concealed the link between Actos© and bladder cancer. According to the warning label the FDA added to the drug in 2011, taking Actos© for two years or more increases a person’s risk of developing bladder cancer by 40%.

As part of our “Mala Medicina” (Bad Medicine) campaign, Walker Advertising helped fight for justice on behalf of Hispanics who were harmed by Actos©. Hispanics have the highest prevalence of diabetes of any ethnic group. I am proud of our effects to help Hispanics who are injured by harmful medications. In 2014, we supplied approximately 2,000 pharmaceutical leads to our attorney partners.
