U.S. traffic fatalities rose 9.3% year-over-year to 26,000 people during the first nine months of 2015, according to preliminary data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Fatalities in California, Arizona and Hawaii combined rose 3% compared to the same period the previous year. According to decades of NHTSA research, human error contributes to the cause of 94% of collisions.
Nationwide, the number of vehicle miles traveled during the first nine months of 2015 rose about 3.5% to 80.2 billion miles.
Motor vehicles deaths still claim the lives of far too many of our brethren. Countless others are maimed—sometimes irrevocably—every year in collisions. Car crashes are a fact of life, but not one should have to deal with the repercussions of an accident on their own.
