Walker Advertising with Los Defensores is accepting submissions for their bi-annual scholarship. Latino students who are currently enrolled in an accredited California law school are encouraged to apply. Three winners will be selected to receive $5,000 each to help pay for their school fees and other expenses associated with their education.
Latino’s make up 37% of the population in California, and while that number continues to increase, only 4% of California’s attorneys are Latino. Walker Advertising wants to do its part by offering these three scholarships to support the increase of dedicated law students who intend to service their community.
In fact, community service was one of the key reasons Walker Advertising Founder, Mary Ann Walker, started the company. “My commitment to helping the community access expert attorneys is as strong today as when I founded the company more than 25 years ago, “ she says.
While working as a translator in the Los Angeles court system, Walker witnessed people being denied fair and equal treatment because they could not speak English. To help confront this problem, she asked Spanish-speaking attorneys to start jointly advertising their services to the Latino community. Los Defensores was thus started in 1984 with five attorney members. For over 30 years Los Defensores has provided legal access and defended the rights of thousands of Latino families in California.
This desire and passion to serve others is what the bi-annual scholarship is all about. To apply, students are required to include a completed application form, a current resume, official transcripts for undergraduate and law schools, a letter of recommendation from someone is the legal community, and a personal statement of up to 1,000 words. The statement must have details related to the applicant’s personal background, past and current service to the Latino community, and financial need.
Walker Advertising is a full-service advertising agency specializing in the creation of campaigns for the legal profession. The mission of the company can be summed up in one word – “access”. Promoting access to quality legal representation and allowing financial access for up-and-coming lawyers is a key component of everything the company does.
Latino students considering a future in law do not typically focus on emphasizing their unique heritage. The fear of being labeled, refused, or misrepresented causes many applicants to leave their race identification space blank. However, many schools and programs are actually seeking minority students. In addition, many grants and scholarships are open only to minority applicants.
Walker Advertising thrives on the ability to provide community access to exceptional lawyers through powerful brands, including Los Defensores, Walker & Walker Attorney Network, and 1-800-THE-LAW2. The powerful network has helped more than two million community members in need of legal help since its start. Submit Your Scholarship Application Today!
