Our founder, Mary Ann Walker Aguirre, was an interpreter in the Los Angeles courts in the 1980s.

She recognized that many Latinos did not receive the justice they deserved simply because they did not speak English well. She spoke to attorneys about her concerns and proposed to publicize their services in the Hispanic community. Five of them agreed, and Los Defensores was born.

The success of Los Defensores prompted the creation of a second cooperative called 1-800-THE-LAW2, which serves English speaking consumers.
